One of my new year’s resolution for this year is to learn and enjoy the events of different seasons in Japan.
First up is a herbal rice porridge called Nanakusa-Gayu.
We mix 7 herbs, which all have meanings, on January 7th to wish for good health in the new year.
The 7 herbs include:
Seri (Japanese parsley) – for increased appetite
Nazuna – a popular ingredient in the Edo period.
Gogyo – effective in preventing colds and relieving fever.
Hakobera – rich in vitamin A and was used as medicine for stomachaches.
Hotoke no za – rich in fiber.
Suzuna (Turnip) – rich in vitamins.
Suzushiro (Japanese daikon radish) – aids in digestion and helps prevent colds.
I was very simple to make and easy on the stomach. I wouldn’t mind eating it everyday 🙂
Next up is Ehomaki in February!
